Inventing David Geffen (2012)
#1
Inventing David Geffen was a documentary from the American Masters series on PBS made in 2012. So, it's not quite as new as I thought. But it was new to me. It does paint a pretty complete picture of Geffen's rise from William Morris mailroom clerk to billionaire Hollywood mogul. I knew bits of this story but not enough. I did learn a lot about his life and was gobsmacked to learn he dated Cher for over 18 months. I think he made a lot enemies as well as friends. He was fiercely loyal to his friends and not a good enemy to have. I think they downplayed the terrible enemy part of his character but it was broached.

It's a good documentary if you want to get a good behind the scenes look at the music and motion picture businesses.

Sounds like this shows him in a better light than the book Hotel California where he comes off as a total asshole. Good at business, but an asshole.

No, you get the sense he's an asshole in the movie, if you look carefully.

Not until you say your safety word.

What's that?

No, no. 'Thank you sir, may I have another?' is not your safety word.

Now you gotta beg for it...

Nope. That wasn't it either.

I think there's a boot here for you to lick.
