A killer drives a Mercedes into a crowd of people, kills eight and injures a bunch. He drives off into the fog never to be heard from again. It's the one case Detective Bill Hodges never solved before he retired. Retirement is a downward spiral into depression and thoughts of suicide until Mr Mercedes sends him a note.
It's a straight ahead mystery novel without any supernatural horror. There is plenty of ordinary horror what with the murders and other horrible events but no ghosts or midnight creatures. He does dedicate the book to James M. Cain.
It was pretty good. I do like the direction the most recent novels are taken. I've found that I like King's style, very clear, but I haven't really cared for the subjects he writes about. But if he writes more crime stories like this, I'll read them
