Blood Sugar Fun

Yeah, I’m trippin on how I missed one because I recall staying on schedule more or less. The pandemic warped my sense of time…

Ya know what? I AM on #5 too. I forgot that Medium Kaiser didn't mark my last dose on my vax card.

I swear the pandemic has messed with my mind. Yeah, that's the ticket. It's that pandemic's fault.

For my last booster, my ticket was full (thought I'd get a free sandwich or something). I asked them to give me a new card. They handed me a blank one and told me to fill it out myself.

I thought the vax passport was some kind of official document, to be filled out only by authorized staff, but apparently not...

So easy to forge. It was one of those things where the anti-vaxxers were saying it was ridiculous because they were so easy to forge, which was doubly stupid because they should've just shut up and forged them.

I'm still carrying mine in my wallet. What's in your wallet?

After consultation with the diabetes specialist via phone appointment, I agreed to do the middle of the night blood test. That went well. I missed the little slot on the blood test strip a couple of times before i got the blood in the proper spot. And by the middle of the night, I think it was 11:15. I probably should wait for a post midnight bathroom visit.

Good times.

To recap, a good blood sugar result is between 90-120. I feel really bad and it is way too low when it is in the sixties.

Last night, after dinner when my blood sugar just be full of sugar, I hit 55. That number should be impossible after a meal. For instance on Sunday, I forgot to test before my meal. Since I had only just eaten, I might get an accurate reading. So, after about ten minutes of eating breakfast, I took the reading. It came back at 270. If my belly wasn't full of food, I would have been freaked out at a number that high.

Imagine my surprise after an even bigger meal and even more time to digest, my number was in the mid fifties. The only cure was to scarf down some sugar. Fortunately there were Girl Scout Thin Mints in the house to eat. Oddly, after consuming most of a sleeve, my sugar only recovered to about 67. Better still not great. I then had a nutrigrain bar which got me back up to regular numbers. I was still soaked in sweat by the time the night was over and I still felt woozy.

The Queen was a bit disturbed by the adventure and asked what was she to do if I passed out. I said call 911. Although, I just learned that our address isn't in the 911 directory. It would be bad if I passed out.

And I also felt bad about eating. I'm currently in diet mode, trying to lose wait to help with my diabetes the natural way. So, to not eat helps my diabetes. But last night the only way to stave off the effects of my diabetes was to eat. It's a vicious cycle.

I just did a blood draw last week at medium Kaiser downtown. They didn’t test my A1C. Not did they take my blood pressure which my doc is asking for. I could dig out my sphygmomanometer and do it myself but that’s always awkward.

I bought one of those electronic blood pressure kits because Big Kaiser needed that information from me.

Maybe because I'll turn 60 this year, lately I've been getting lots of emails about walk in tubs and offer to join AARP

I really wish my blood sugar readings would make some rational sense. Since January 1st, I've been living by the mantra "Eat Less, Exercise More" and I've been pretty good about. I'm doing this to preclude having to use more medicine to control my diabetes. I'm currently at the maximum for oral medications and that is a place I don't want to be. I also don't want to be doing daily insulin injections either.

I have lost weight. I have been exercising more, mostly walking. My blood sugar numbers remain stubbornly high, too high for the amount of weight I have lost. Or at least that was my hope. Naturally, I decided to do an experiment or a test really. I noticed on Sunday mornings when I don't do the big walk and take my blood sugar test my blood sugar numbers are considerably lower than during the week when I take my blood sugar readings after I exercise. My theory was exercise was raising the amount of sugar in my blood which skewed my numbers higher. For the last three weeks, I've taken the readings before and after my walks. Wouldn't you know it, my blood sugar level is between 30 and 40 points lower before the walk than after the walk.

I had broached the idea that exercise was skewing my numbers with the pharmacy tech who works with me on controlling my diabetes. He gave me the non-committal "Interesting theory" you give to the laymen. It will be nice to hear what he says this week when he sees the numbers.

Does it explain why my numbers fell dramatically after dinner last night? No. But that is a question for another experiment.
