Cinema Shorthand Society Wrote:Q: "What was the casting like for "The Karate Kid" (1984)? Did they put out a call sheet for “blonde @ssholes”?"
William Zabka: "[Laughs] No, but there was sure a lot of them in the waiting room. I was actually with a commercial agent, and I was just starting out. I said, 'I want to be in movies, maybe I can do some movies.' And they started sending me out on these auditions. One of them was at Columbia [Pictures] at the time—I forget the movie, but it was being cast by Pennie DuPont, who was one of the casting directors of 'The Karate Kid'. I didn’t get that film, but I got a call that they wanted me to come in and read for a movie called 'The Karate Kid.' I remember talking to my manager—I was actually at the gym, working out in my rainbow headband and tank top—and I said, 'I don’t know karate.' He said, 'Well, they still want to see you.' So I went down and I met with [casting directors] Caro Jones and Pennie DuPont, and we talked for a minute and they said, 'You’re perfect for this.' They handed me a script—which was the first time I ever had a script. I went home and I read it, and then I really felt like I’m never going to be able to do this. I was like, 'This guy’s like a champion martial artist. I don’t know any karate.'
But I connected with Johnny, that’s the for-sure thing. It was the first script I ever read where I thought, 'Well, this is kind of easy. I don’t even have to act this.' Not that I’m a jerk, but I just get the guy. I went to the interview and pulled up in my dad’s 1971 red Volvo station wagon with Def Leppard playing in the car. I walked into the room, and there was a whole world of blonde-haired, blue-eyed Johnnies, and everybody seemed to be in character. I came from the commercial acting world, and that’s a little different, where everybody’s friendly. This was the more serious 'thespian' world, so everybody was in character. I thought, 'I’m just going to go sit in the car because nobody’s talking to me.'
And then they pulled me into the room and I read for John. I think I grabbed the guy’s shirt and then I left, and I didn’t expect to get a callback. Then a few weeks later I was back in there. I think the final audition for me was actually about three weeks into the martial arts training. They brought all the studio heads and [producer] Jerry Weintraub, and all the producers came into the karate room where I was training for me to do a flying sidekick—the one I do at the fence fight in the skeleton outfit. They wanted to see how my martial arts [training] was coming along. But in the meantime, they had five or six replacement Johnnies sitting on the floor.
Now, either they were going to replace me or they were going to double me, I don’t know what, but it felt like my last audition. So I was a little nervous, and I remember throwing this flying sidekick. Pat Johnson [a martial arts choreographer who played the film’s referee] had this big pad up next to Ralph Macchio’s head, and it was a really sloppy kick. The air went out of the room. Pat looked at me and said, 'Focus. You can do this.' I went back and did another flying sidekick, and this one was perfect somehow. My heel actually went through the pad and punctured a hole in the drywall, so all the drywall kind of came down, and there was all this dust from behind the pad. Pat removed the pad, and there was a hole in the wall—it was almost like it was planned that way. Before the drywall cleared, everybody was out of the room. I guess I proved myself or something. That was the moment when I thought, 'I’m actually going to get to play this character.'" (AV Club)
Happy Birthday, William Zabka!

RE: Cobra Kai - Drunk Monk - 10-25-2021

Guess which D00M br0 was just granted access to screeners for CK S4?

Go ahead.

Guess.

Here's a hint: He's not an asshole. At least not yet.

RE: Cobra Kai - Greg - 10-25-2021

Then it's somebody other than DM? Now, I'm confused.

(Look, you pitch up softballs, they are going come back at you)

RE: Cobra Kai - Drunk Monk - 10-25-2021

Wait wait.

Was 'softballs' your safety word?

I can't remember now. I wrote it down somewhere. I made a note.

On the inside of some knickers...

RE: Cobra Kai - Drunk Monk - 10-25-2021

S4e1: My predicted play came true but not the way I thought it would at all. That's fresh. Everyone knew about the next KK cameo from the trailers and that strikes fast and hard. Kamen wine. Good Easter egg. Choreo was a little better - the kids have been practicing. The sense of humor is still strong - that's what keeps this show engaging. What surprised me was reuniting scene that got me just a bit misty. Where did that come from? I think that was just me. I'm such a softy nowadays.

RE: Cobra Kai - Drunk Monk - 10-25-2021

E2: a whole new story arc with a new kid bringing another one of my predictions into play. The new kid is nearly woven into last season (I was going to guess the first two seasons - but that could still be in play).

Another fight but it was less impressive. So far, it’s one big fight per episode, which is a lame thrum that I hope they break soon.

A few nice twists. I’m excited to see my predictions were on point. My press invite had spoilers that I am specifically forbidden to keep secret until the NDA expires (prolly the end of Dec) and unfortunately I caught a glimpse before I could avert my glance. Another major prediction I made for Den is coming.

They are nailing that fortune cookie wisdom doled out by strip mall Sensei all the time. It’s subtle and I can’t quite phrase that contextually yet. Maybe there’s an article in there. My editor said to watch it all and then come back to him with pitches.

RE: Cobra Kai - Drunk Monk - 11-05-2021

S4e3: There’s some surprising life lessons doled out by each Sensei that is astonishingly wise. Still packed with Easter eggs. Still fun. What I like here is that each character has reasonable motivations - the backstories are justifying. Also there’s no real good guys or bad guys. Well maybe Carmen is good, but even Kreese in all his villainy grapples with ptsd from Nam so there’s some justification, albeit no redemption. It casts him as more tragic instead of caricature. The new character Kenny brings some reversal, tainting the previous bullied kids as they become the bullies. And Daniel’s son is coming into play nicely finally. Something I really like is how each Sensei expresses their dedication to Karate here - what they’ve sacrificed and how they feel it has been worth it. That’s relatable and resonates deeply with me. Even johnny’s love of coors is explained.

S4e4: Nice 80s film and music references. Those press my nostalgia button. I want to see Moon come back into play. Amanda might also be good but she’s flawed as the overprotective Mama bear, which gives her role room to err. I just learned that actress plays Sheldon’s sister in Big Bang Theory - might have to dig that out because I like her performance here and only vaguely remember her character in that. It’s consistently good writing how the character stories intertwine and how the Easter eggs are tucked - definitely by fans for fans.

RE: Cobra Kai - Greg - 11-06-2021

There ain't no good guys.
There ain't no bad guys.
There's just you and me
And we just disagree.

RE: Cobra Kai - Drunk Monk - 11-06-2021

See now that would be Daniel music, although it’s late 70s, not 80s. Johnny’s comment on Daniel music got a genuine lol from me here in e4.

Well now, I nailed that one in e5. Also nailed another one of my major predictions but that one I’m specifically bound to NDA on. This Ep is the rematch so a deep dive in flashbacks. Silver’s character is strange - he’s reasonable then he’s psycho. Can’t get his motives yet - he’s a good addition but I’m not sure it works.

E6 adds yet another new character with potential. Sam v Tori is getting quite good and Amanda’s confession was very character building. Demetri brings Eli full circle.

RE: Cobra Kai - Drunk Monk - 11-07-2021

E7: The bully dynamics keep shifting admirably.

Another prediction of mine comes true. I happy that I nailed so many of my predictions - that article felt a little risky but it was a request from my DoG editors.

There’s more to Silver but I’m still not sure where that’s going. Anyone read Leviathan by Hobbes? I think I might have read some excerpts in college but don’t remember it. Silver was reading it and I’m trying to figure what that means.

I like the new Eagle Fang student.

RE: Cobra Kai - Drunk Monk - 11-08-2021

E8: another of my predictions comes true and it was the one that got mocked. It’s prom night again and that means fight night. Another new character emerges. The show takes a very dark turn.

One week until the all valley. 2 eps to go.
