We're talking hard liquor here. Whiskey and Vodka. These go best with salty nuts and sour citrus fruits. Want some of my salty nuts? How about some sour citrus fruits?

cranefly is right about wine, cheese, and most importantly, pudding.
ED is wrong about "working class" whiskey. That's JD and it should be mixed with coke. smells like frat-vomit. Triple Nickel and Canadian Mist are the others. Working-class whiskey is drunk for effect, not taste. The blends have taste.
ED is right about blends. Some of them are very good and they are very affordable. Grants is the best, but I have had some fine Irish blends as well. Jameson's Crested 10, for instance.
Crusty old men, drinking in their dark, wood-panneled clubs, talking of past financial victories are drinking brandy.

Vodka hides in fruit like lice hide in BeePee's nose hairs. Ok, that analogy sucks, but vodka does hide in fruit to the point that it's like candy. Ever done a vodka watermelon? Yikes. You'll be drunker than snot after a slice or two.
We went to a party at Jennifer's. Yes, that Jennifer. The Jennifer. Anyway, her hubby Tim had prepared this vodka strawberry lemonade by leaving strawberries in vodka for days, changing out the strawberries occassionally for fresher ones, and dropping a few vanilla beans in it. This made a red strawberry syrup which was then mixed with homemade lemonade. Yummy. Stacy had a glass and didn't even realize it was alcoholic. I'm looking at it and judging she just downed a few shots of vodka. Most people woudl be schnockered if they ate three strawberries. That's where you could really taste the vodka. You could only taste strawberries elsewhere. I could have drunk a lot of that. Yummmm. Can't do that with whiskey. Just goes to show, every liquor has its place under heaven.

Normally I think brandy is too sweet, but it's nice when you're sick.
Once my dad was sick and drank an entire fifth in about two days. On the third day he was better.

I tell ya, it was a revelation when I actually bothered to read the labels of nyquil, et.al. It's just booze and aspirin. Well, there's a little more, but I can drink much better booze with my aspirin et.al.
I'm not much for brandy. Never really developed a taste for it, and I know a few stalwart brandy drinkers who oft try to ply me with it. I'm not sure why I don't care for it. I just don't. It's not like tequila, another drink I avoid because it leads to embarrassing moments like sing Heartbreak Hotel in kareoke with Greg at a local Mexican restaurant.

I don't remember any shot glasses. I remember some unexplained bruises in hard to reach places. Do you still have these shot glasses? If I saw them, would they trigger some repressed memory and throw me into a ballistic rage?

The summer cocktail contest winner - King Bob - 06-22-2006
Maybe there is a use for gin:
The Cuke
6 limes, rinsed
1 cup packed mint leaves, no stems, plus 6 sprigs for garnish
3 unwaxed cucumbers
½ cup sugar
2 cups vodka or gin, preferably Hendrick's gin
Sparkling water.
1. Thinly slice 3 limes and place in a pitcher. Juice the rest and add juice to pitcher. Add mint leaves. Slice 2 cucumbers and add, then add sugar. Muddle ingredients. Add vodka or gin. Place in refrigerator to steep 30 minutes or longer.
2. Peel remaining cucumber and cut lengthwise into 6 spears.
3. Fill 6 highball or other large glasses with ice. Strain mixture from pitcher into each. Top with a splash of sparkling water, garnish each glass with a sprig of mint and a cucumber spear, and serve.
Yield: 6 servings.
