This has got to be the dumbest film I've seen in years. My inner Greg was incessantly asking questions about plot arcs that were dumb, so what possible answers could there be but dumb? Oh Donnie. So dumb. You were doing so well. I've really been enjoying all your recent movies but then this implosion of dumb. This one really hurt - feckin broke my dumbometer.
Donnie is on vacation with his family and gets in a fight with his son so he drives off, leaving his son in some sketchy abandoned shacks. They are on vacation in snow country. The son is like 8. He drops off his wife and daughter at a nearby tree farm for a bathroom, then goes back to find that his son is gone. The main plot is Donnie trying to find his boy in the snow whilst wracked with guilt for being so dumb.
Everyone is an asshole in this film. A dumb asshole. The cops, the search party, the press, all dumb assholes. But mostly Donnie, the dumbest asshole, who keeps doing these dumb things like falling into icy water, like a lot. Like how many times do you fall into freezing snowbound rivers before you start not doing that? Then there's the kidnapping ransom. There's a beat down. There's marital stress. Then the blizzard. Then there's the avalanche. Then the bear. It just goes on and on, moving from dumb conflict that might've been avoided if everyone wasn't dumb assholes. Ooooon, my head hurts from the dumb.
Not D00M recommended except for Greg, who should watch this if he every wants to break his brain with overwhelming dumbness (and if he did, I'm sure it'd make for an amusing read here).
