Seems like we are in the middle of a Sondheim moment. He's a character in Tick Tick Boom. Spielberg is about to release his version of Sondheim's West Side Story. And sadly the man just passed. I'm not familiar with his work except knowing his name has been ubiquitous for my entire life.
This film explores six of his seminal works while talking about his life. I caught the film about a half an hour late but what I saw was still really interesting. The whole film is structured around interviews Sondheim did from the 1950s until the 2010s. Sondheim himself goes in depth how he created the songs. I was particularly impressed by how he came up with Send in the Clowns for the original singer. Sondheim said that singer took a lot of breaths so he built the phrasing around that fact. And there are a lot of great musical performances in there. It was amazing to see how many people covered Send in the Clowns.
Since it is on HBO, I'm taping a future recording to catch the beginning where they go over West Side Story. I'm thinking I need to see more Sondheim musicals.

As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
