A pandemic ravages the earth. Again. But instead of creating Zombies, the pandemic makes animal human hybrids. Will Forte is the father of a deer-human hybrid. When Forte sees what is happening to the hybrids, he heads off into the hills to raise his boy Gus. Most of the episode is about raising the boy until bad things happen. Eventually Gus must go out into the world.
It's kind of a slow burn. Not a lot happens until near the end. I will check out more of it.

Been looking forward to this - Iron Man's DC transition. I'll probably tune in soon.

2 eps in. I’m liking it. A lot hinges on Gus and the kid delivers well enough. The pandemic metaphor is really working for me, along with the blame cast on marginalized - perhaps this hits harder for me because I can relate to being part of a marginalized race blamed for the pandemic. The effects and overall design are satisfying. The post-apocalyptic world is being cleaned out adequately.
I wanted a bit more from the sword scene in ep1. Forte is better in serious roles than I would've anticipated, but not brilliant.
In e2, I like how the Big Man is developing. Dr. Singh’s arc has potential as well as the zoo gal. I’m optimistic that this will be entertaining. Not clear about how mercenary the world has become yet.
I’m in for a few more eps - maybe the whole thing.
Greg - you describe a lot of series as a ‘slow burn’. What’s up with that?

It's apt?
John Oliver did his whole last week on Asian Americans. Quite damming as usual.

You’re the 3rd friend of mine that has recommended Oliver’s show - the other two are Asians. I’ll check it out soon.

I like Will Forte much more as a dramatic actor. Did you ever see him with Bruce Dern in Nebraska?

E3: Market, a survivor’s party, a piglet. The Last Men are thinly disguised metaphors for the proud boys, and that’s working okay. Still not clear what works and what doesn’t. There’s trains, power, plumbing...but what is the car sitch exactly?
So much hinges on Gus. At first, given his upbringing, I wanted him to be more like Jodie Foster’s Nell and Saiorse Ronan’s Hanna, but Gus is charming and working in his own way. Jepp is a tad cliche, but working because the actor has good gravitas.
I also like the cinematography. Heavy on the drone shots, but some nice panoramic wilderness shots.
Wait... was that a sword? Or just a long knife? Or maybe it was a tusk?
E4 post-apocalypse furries. Not sure how they could keep their camp a secret lair when they’re lighting ceremonial smoke fires. Whatev. We’ll just let that go.
Gus’s effects have been convincing with his ears but the full cgi animals are cartoonish.
I’m rather enjoying this. I’m fascinated by its commentary on the pandemic, but moreso, I like how the main protags are developing.

E5: a very predictable Ep plotwise. I suppose being just after midseason, it was easy to guess where things were going. Not quite sure how that body was moved. On Trixie? Seems too obvs.
E6: Setting up the next 2 eps - the last 2. Liked the hablucination. Wait, where did all those zoo hybrids come from? Kinda wish Bobby had better cgi. Why can’t Pigtail wear a plague mask and an ear-covering hood or hat? Easier that antlers. Singh’s ptsd rap was for the frontliners. The football monkey wrench fight was the closest thing to a sword fight, closer than when that Last man drew a sword in e1.
Still quite charming. Gus, Jepp & Bear have good chemistry, and that’s what makes this work. Gus’ hope also keeps it positive. I love the big pano scenes. It’s lite post-pandemic fare that’s working just fine for me right now.

Episode 2, the one in the ski chalet. The story continues to build. I like the introduction of the zoo keeper. I like the horrific back story of the cure for the disease. Lots of revelations about people's back stories which was nice. I still want to see more.
The CGI effects in this are terrible, especially the matte paintings. I'm looking at you ski chalet in the mountains. And it seems like no one on the show has ever been to Yellowstone because nothing in the show looks like Yellowstone. And where did they get the power to run the ski lift? End quibbles.

I've been having issues with public utilities all the way through. Electricity, gas, plumbing, they all seem to work.
Another thing that bugs me is that all the hybrids like Gus & Pigtail have an extraordinary sense of smell. One of the main reasons deer and pigs have a great sense of smell is their snouts. Both Gus & Pigtail have human size noses so their sense of smell shouldn't be so heightened (note that I taught Sensation & Perception in grad school, so I know too much about this stuff).
The CGI gets worse. Wait until Bobby...
But like you say, if you let the quibbles get you, it'll ruin this show. You just gotta let that stuff go to enjoy it.

E7: It is all about this episode for me. ALL ABOUT THIS EPISODE. As soon as you see it, you'll understand why. The story comes together nicely. The separate arcs cross and interweave. But this episode made the entire season for me. Loved it. And now, I love this show.
E8: The finale is a cliffhanger, some of which was predictable, inevitable really, with a few more curveball connections, well, one I didn't foresee that was pretty good. But a cliffhanger. The back stories are revealed, all except one, the General's.
The group hug worked for me better than I thought it would. The finale scene was obvious, but a fine teaser for next season... assuming it gets renewed. The stage is set. The world is built. The characters have endeared themselves.
I'm in. I hope it does get renewed.

E3 We forgot we were even watching this series. Kind of a bad surprise at that party. And why did they resolve it the way they did.
How do they keep a train running? And who controls the train infrastructure?
It seems like every episode has one major thing that happens to drive us to the next episode and the rest of the episode is just screwing around until that thing happens.

Exactly my thoughts here:

There's another issue with fire smoke. Early in the show, they get discovered due to a smoke plume, so you'd think people would keep their smoke plumes on the down low so as not to draw attention. But then later, there's lots of smoke plumes. You'll see some in the next ep, and towards the end, they find someone by it. These inconsistencies would really bug me if Gus weren't so damn cute.

I find this is so in most shows nowadays. FWIW, it will tie up nicely towards the end. Like I said, it's all about ep7. When you get there, that's a big payout. And you'll think of me. It's important that you think of me. It's all about me. Every time you think of me, an angel gets its wings. Or a devil gets its horns. Or Batman goes down on Catwoman. Something good happens. Think of me. ME!!!
