Wolverine plays Gary Hart in a one note performance.
We all know how the Hart saga played out. It was also the rise of tabloid journalism or at least the start of looking into politicians affairs. So, there wasn't a lot of drama to the story.
But then it was also a story badly told. They were trying for a cinema verite style of film making. You are in the moment so everyone is talking over everyone else and you can't get a sense of what people are actually saying. Wolverine constantly bangs the drum of it's position on issues that matters not this extra-curricular stuff. Problem is, he can't get anyone to believe him.
They try to make it relevant for today by positioning Donna Rice as a victim, too. But they never really follow her story.
Interestingly, there was an article recently in the paper about how the whole Monkey Business affair was a put up job. That political fixers put him in a compromising position in order to ruin him. That was never discussed in the picture.
