If only we had a trailers section . . .
I thought they were attaching this trailer to Star Wars? Which also brings up the Star Trek vs Star Wars debate. Can't I enjoy both?
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit

But given DOOM, we will surely discuss this. There are 120+ posts related to Star Trek here already. So it'll need its own indie thread eventually.
For many of the trailers on the Coming Soon thread, well, only a few of us will see those films. This one I imagine most of us will see.

I thought surely one of u would beat me to the punch on this one.
ST B (3) is ok. Not as awesome as the 1st J.J. Not as rehash/mishmash as J.J. 2 (still don't but the Mr. Roarke/Sherlock swap but liked the big spaceship battles and the attempt at recursiveness). The latest installment feels like an episode, not quite as epic as the others. It needed more callbacks to the original - there were some but not enough. I think Justin Lin got his franchises confused. It leans more towards Wars than Trek. There's too many new aliens like the SW cantina, and the finale is akin to destroying the Death Star but instead saving Yorktown. The characters are all still pretty solid especially Quinto, and Pine continues to stray from Shatner but not too much. It's a bit Scotty heavy, given he wrote it. The passing of Nimoy and Yelchin is logged. I kept thinking Krall was Krull (he did have a chakra like weapon). Jada delivered an ok fight - will she replace Chekov if there's another? As an Asian male, I'm a little bummed about the gay Sulu, but I get that. There's some decent big screen ship explosions and a lot of crooked sets - the ending was predictable, inexplicable, and illogical, but I'll still see the next one if they can reassemble this cast again.

a Grunberg cameo. More SW evidence. He plays the same role. Lucky bastard.

Gratuitous use of motorcycle...dbox sucked. Was most effective during the end credits.

Another victim of the "Third" trilogy installment. The Avengers, Iron Man, Batman all met the same overindulgent end.
The explosions overshadowed the plot and dialogue. The film itself was a perfect example of the problem {SPOILERSS AHEAD} The encounter in the nebula cleanly showed the severing of the engines and after a command of 'cut the throat' the severing of the saucer. All following close-combat and space battles were WTF is going on. There were fights in carbon-copy hallways, generic crewmembers and machinery shown too quickly to identify. The first Jai-Alai planet battle was horribly choreographed/edited. I had no idea it was a hologram fight - it was just weird flashes and suddenly the girl scares off the other guys. There is another fight in a gravity-changing Enterprise saucer but who the hell can make sense of it? So, after the inexplicable alien sneezing acid scene they lock a crewman up to a weapon test chamber.... Oh - fuck it. This movie was a mess. I liked the first one though.

I'm forgetting which Star Trek movie Bai Ling was in.

Finally, got to see it. First off, you are all right. Once again, the Prince of Darkness was in charge of lighting. Did they use the same city for the Yorktown as they did in Guardians of the Galaxy?
My main thinking was that if the choice was between logic and coolness factor, Director Lin always opted for coolness. So many things didn't make a lick of sense, but looked really cool. I thought the use of classical music was week. Overall it wasn't bad, but in the next installment can we keep the ship in one piece for a change? Those things have to be expensive.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm

Is that a Bai-Ling autograph or just some random graffiti? And what the hell are those white stains, DM?

she was almost a Jedi but ran afoul of Lucasfilm by posing for Hugh. She's 50+ now and still stirring up her own kinky brand of reality-show scandals.

I just rewatched this because I have it on Paramount+ and we’re letting that go and I’ve been meaning to revisit it because when I first saw it, I didn’t put together that Joe Taslim was in it, nor did I realize what an action star Sofia Boutella would become.
I also didn’t know that Avarasala played a Federation Commodore, surely the role that got her on The Expanse. Even without seeing her, her first lines were unmistakably recognizable. That voice. Damn. How many cigs and how much whiskey must you down to get pipes that gravelly? All our previous comments stay true but I confess I enjoyed it more this time, mostly because my expectations were low. I was again struck by how little I remembered. It’s dripping with dumb and illogic, but it’s very visual. The design is eye-popping. Clearly Lin had a vision to take ST ‘beyond’ and like so many of his Furious blockbusters, he achieves that by sacrificing coherence for spectacle. If you think of this as a theatrical experience, there’s a lot of eye candy as long as you don’t think about anything too hard, which is a contradiction of the 5 year mission. Just think of it as a weak yet visual Ep and it’s okay. So many aliens tho. Were they all included in canon now? Or is this all written off to the Kelvin timeline? I’d still like to see another movie installment of this crew. They should replace Chekov with Arex. Or better yet M’Ress.
