A skinny and wiry Roger Daltry is master of the vacant gaze; Oliver Reed excels in the drinking scenes and bellows out his songs (to be dubbed over later by an actual singer); Eric Clapton is woodenly robotic (or robotically wooden?); Elton John has no interest in the film, but agrees to do the part if he gets to keep the shoes; Robert Powell (who played Mahler in Ken Russell’s Mahler) plays the hapless father; Jack Nicholson camps it up as the Specialist...

...and Anne-Margret and Tina Turner just totally rule.

Wonderful wanton madness.

The movie doesn't even come out for another week.
Hope I didn't give away too many spoilers.

P.S. Now I'm trying to track down a copy of Lisztomania. That should bring me close to closure on Ken Russell's musical extravaganzas.

Why can't today's bands make rock operas like this anymore?
