Oddly enough this show was billed as 'C.J. Ramone' with 'The Damned' as the supporting artist.
Why? Did the promoters think the 1989 bass guitar replacement for Dee Dee Ramone was a bigger draw than the seminal band that rivals the Sex Pistols for being the godfathers of punk?
I was actually happy as an old fart thinking The Damned would play their set and we could bail on C.J. for an early night.
Nope. The Damned were the headliner (as they should be).
C.J. Ramone did his best to be the modern-day Ramones/Social Distortion without realizing we don't need a modern-day Ramones/Social Distortion. They did a minimum of Ramones songs while explicitly saying they were 'Ramones songs' as if they were a cover band. Their T-shirts featured a stars-and-stripes hand giving the middle finger stating 'all-American-punk'. It was kind of sad.
Meanwhile on the 'Don't You Wish That We Were Dead' Tour The Damned' were out-punking everyone. They avoided their 80's alternative 'hits' and got the mosh pit going with '"I Just Can't be Happy Today", "New Rose", "Neat, Neat, Neat''. There was some easing of the punk influence with "History of the World - pt 1" and the cover "Alone Again Or ..." but this was mostly a punk show with encores of "Smash It Up" and "I Feel Allright".
Anyway - I'm still waiting for the "Curtain Call" live performance
