A russian language film about a small moment during the battle of Stalingrad. Turns out, even in Russia, war is bad. During a pivotal battle in the battle 5 Russian soldiers are thrown together to protect a house which blocks the Germans advance to the Volga. The house's remaining occupant is Katya a young girl who all the soldiers fall in love with. Across the way, is the German Capitain Khan who struggles with the war and his own descent from the German Ideal.
It all gets very melodramatic in between some really beautiful battle scenes. My favorite is the charge of the Russian soldiers who are covered in flames. The film could have used a few more battle scenes and less wallowing in how much the various soldiers care for Katya.
I believe I wanted to see this film after I saw the making of short for the film. There is extensive use of CGI to build the battle scarred world of Stalingrad where ash constantly fills the air and the pallet for the scenes are just various shades of grey.
