Evil Sexy Beast
#1
An under the radar film that I only heard about because Seth Green appeared on my morning radio show. And I could still live a long and prosperous life having never seen this film. But if I hadn't, I would have missed the stunning behind the scenes documentary about the writer of the project, Scott Lew.

The film itself reminded me a lot of Sushi Girl. Five people meet in a bar and spend their entire time there talking. four of the people there are in love with the fifth. In Roshomon fashion (sort of) they tease out the story behind the fifth person, who they all love and hate. The film stars Seth Green, Michelle Trachtenber, William Baldwin, Harold Perineau and Katie Sachoff.

There is a lot of talking and talking and talking. It is all about their relationship with the titular Evil Sexy Beast. There isn't a lot of drama or tension, maybe a little, but I spent a lot of time while watching the film wishing I was watching the NHL playoffs.

But then I cruised through the slim pickings of the bonuse features. There were three. I could watch the film again with the commentary track on. Pass, thanks. I could watch the trailers for upcoming Lionsgate films. Since I didn't watch them before the picture, chances are slim I'm going to watch them after the picture. Finally there was what I thought was a making of documentary about the film called 'Jiu Jitsuing Reality'. There wasn't any fighting in the film so I was curious to see why they would be talking about a martial arts film.

I thought they had mad a mistake when the film started and I saw a guy with a tracheastomy tube in a wheel chair sitting in front of computer, operating it by laser pointer on his forehead. After several beats, it became clear this motionless mass of flesh was the screenwriter for the film, suffering from ALS for the last ten years. It was amazing to hear about his struggles and how he actually wrote the film. For instance, it takes him about four hours to get out of bed in the morning with the help of his wife and assistants. He types with the laser recognition on his forehead which points to a keyboard on the screen. His assistant helps by guessing the word he is typing and finishes it for him. It looks like a glacially slow process. But he perseveres. The whole endeavor seriously undercuts anybody saying it is really difficult for them to write.

The worst moments were some home videos of him demonstrating his new wheel chair. He could still talk and was much livelier. He was overjoyed to be showing off his new contraption. Jump cut to the present to where he is having his mouth drained of fluid via vacuum tube.

All sixteen minutes of the film was depressing and uplifting. It is probably the best reason to rent Evil Sexy Beast, just so you can get to this short documentary.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit
