The Garner Files by James Garner
#1
Turns out James Garner is bit of a grumpy guy. He doesn't like a lot of things. He hates Hollywood. He hates agents. He hates producers. He hates California. The list is pretty long and he takes a book to detail it.

But he's got some good anecdotes about his Maverick and Rockford files days. I wanted to get some inside dope about The Great Escape but he didn't have anything big to say, except he didn't think highly of Steve McQueen, who was Garner's neighbor. He did cover his battles with Jack Warner about is contract and he talked about his lawsuit with Universal about Rockford Files residuals. He was also on the mall when MLK gave his "I have a Dream" speech.

The only big shocker for me was his laudatory statements about Marijuana. It turns out Rockford has had his weed card for fifty years.

Weed cards didn't exist in CA until 1996.

He gave it about a paragraph in the recap of all his movies. He said he was honored to be beaten up by Bruce Lee. Between takes Bruce showed him some martial arts.

According to urban legend, in later versions of Marlowe, Lee's death scene was cut out because the filmmakers thought it would bother rabid Bruce fans. I always thought it was funny as #1. It is a stupid resolution to the fight scene and #2. Garner got to imply Bruce was gay, which was almost as funny as the 'what rippling muscles' line in Way of the Dragon.
