It's the Ryan Gosling movie fest. It seems he is in every movie I rent these days. Good thing he is dreamy.
As usual, here are the reasons I rented this movie. It was supposed to have awesome car chases. It was supposed to be really dramatic and well made. Finally, Albert Brooks was supposed to have an Oscar worthy role in it.
Yeah, not so much.
I think Gosling was channeling his inner robot as the main character. His distinctive character traits were his toothpick and his scorpion jacket. Every scene goes on too long as we watch him try to emote through this giant wall of pasivity. This film was so passive that I continued to watch it for about twenty seconds after the DVD got hung up. I just thought the director was holding on Gosling for a really long time to really milk the emotion of the scene.
There were only two car chases of note. One at the beginning where it was all about stealth rather than driving at ridiculously high speeds. The second was better but much to brief. And that was it for the car chases.
As for Albert Brooks, he wasn't in the film that much. And his amount of evil was kind of slight. Don't get me wrong, he was bad, I just expected a few more fireworks.
This could be the film cure for insomnia.
