Very enjoyable. Very Euro. I like Euro. Saoirse Ronan and Cate Blanchett are great actresses. Saoirse would have made an outstanding Alice, much better than Wasikowska. Cate, well, she's just at the top of her game with as the villain, and pulls it off with that refined style we've come to expect from her. Solid filmmaking - including one remarkable swirling-environment extended shot from a crowded airport to a subway ending in a fight that recalls Wright's beach landing scene in Atonement. I think he worked some cuts when some poles crossed the frame, but it was seamless. Some decent fights, surprisingly believable considering that Saoirse is a skinny teenage girl. Shades of Run Lola Run (to the Chemical Brothers no less) which I now think I need to see again (I mean RLR not CB). Even some Grimm and Euro stag myth thrown in for good measure. Yes, I liked this. It totally makes up for Sucker Punch. Could it be the start of a franchise? I hope so.
Stay tuned. More to come. 8)

What? You liked this?
Poor Cate Blanchett. Is this the only one note role she gets to play these days? It seemed there was a lot more going on with her character that was never revealed? What's with all the dental equipment? Spoiler Could she actually have been Hanna's mother? It seemed there was a lot more to this movie to explore that film makers could have but didn't. Lots of backstory that was never fully discussed. Lot's of artsy shots they made for the sake of being artsy.
I liked the film right up until the time she met the touring family. It was like the film was put on hold while Hanna got to have some comic hotel adventures and some teen lesbian romance. Although the stuff in the secret bunker was made me flash to the scene in Galaxy Quest when the Captain and the first are walking through the chompers and First says this makes no sense, "This was a very poorly written episode" Why would you build a bunker with all those weird tunnels?
I did like the Eric Bana fight scene without the cuts. Very impressive. Very good choreography.
It seems every time I see Blanchett these days, this is the role she plays, the very cold calculating villain. Couldn't they have found something more to do to give depth to her robotic terminator killer?
At least they tied the whole thing together nicely with the arrow bit.
I say feh.
And where were the sword fights?

There was one awesome line in the film. It followed the question to Hanna "How did your mom die?"

Perhaps I was still too starstruck from meeting Saorsie in the flesh. Those eyes....
Also, seeing this soon after Sucker Punch, which had many sword fights, as well as scantily-clad hotties, and still couldn't redeem itself, it was a refreshing change.
Cate sold it for me too. The dental thing was awesome.

I'd watch Cate read the obituaries...

Reading the obits to you...what a very villainess thing to do.
I thought she made a good Bob Dylan.

But she had me at Galadriel. When Frodo offered her the Ring and she goes all ballistic with power, I thought 'now this is a woman that could read obituaries to me'.

Finally saw this. +1 for the "Euro-Thriller" genre. Yes, GMan, I liked it. That Downton Abbey chick did not last long, did she?

I'm skeptical that they can carry this off without Saoirse. But I'll still tune in. I'm loyal to the franchise because I'm loyal to Saoirse. I'm telling ya, if you ever looked into those stunning smiling Irish eyes, you'd have been bewitched too. Even the ladies on this forum. I knew then, after meeting her in person, that she was one to watch. Those eyes, my lawd, they haunt me still.

Is this the one with her sisters?
(For the life of me I can't remember a single thing about this movie, and yet, I reviewed it.....)
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm
