Okay, so we missed the last Musée d’Orsay exhibit because we put it off all year until it was about to close and then got shut out by all the other people who did the same thing. So Friday was our 15th anniversary and we got tix in advance. It was a gorgeous day to be in S.F.
The first room is all about cloth. Silks and satins in long gowns - the play of light off them, just amazing. The second room was all pointillism, which I thought I'd like more, but it sort of struck me as flat. The next room was the heart of it: Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Gauguin. It's not the famous Starry Night, but another that's very amazing. VG's self portrait, with its intense green wrinkles around the eyes, is captivating. His room at Arles is also staggering for the light outside the window. T-L wasn't as impressive with the ghost-white spotlight drained flesh pallor. Quite the contrast to Gauguin with his warm tropical hues - the flesh glows like a ripe mango. The final rooms are Nabi, which feels somewhat like a absinthe-toulene hangover. I never really got them until seeing this. Nevertheless it sort of fizzles out save for Rousseau's snake charmer, which is awesome.
It was very crowded and people were staggering about like zombies in headlights. That was annoying.
