The Shaolin Monastery: History, Religion, and the Chinese...
#1
...Martial Arts
By Meir Shahar

When I went to Shaolin in 2003 for the 1st Academic Symposium, there were only a handful of non-Chinese attendees. Meir was outstanding because of his research - this book. When we got a moment to chat, he told me "I'm going to spend next year at Stanford, is that near you?" He was coming with his wife and daughter, who was the same age as Tara almost. When he arrived, we became fast friends over that year. I sat in on his graduate level class at Stanford. I've always said there's Shaolin fate, and our crossing paths were a classic example.

I've read earlier versions of this work. I just finished the final draft. It will probably be in print next year through an academic press. It was a great read for my field, and I'm a year ahead of everyone now. It also took me forever to read the final draft. Back when I had dreams of being a scholar, I envisioned reading scholarly papers, and now I remember how much work they were to read. Not fun. Downright exhausting. Now I got to start chipping on a critique for him. I'm glad I didn't end up going that route. My brain can't handle it.
