The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Very Gilliam, though not as dark as Tidelands. I thought the story might be fragmented from trying to piece together the movie after Heath Ledger's death, but he's in most of the film and in the few scenes where they have a substitute (Jude Law, Colin Farrell, Johnny Depp), it actually works. I was also worried that the CG I saw from the previews was a little over the top, but it worked as well. Not Gilliam's strongest movie, but definitely a good effort.

I really felt for Gilliam after La Mancha. Ledger's passing weighs heavily on this effort and I can't but wonder what the film would have looked like had he lived to finish it. However, the patch job is quite seamless, and if you didn't know Ledger died in mid-production, the plot would not have betrayed that fact.

tg is right on the mark when he says 'Very Gilliam'.

This just popped up on Netflix and I had forgotten I’d seen it (thanks for the DOOMinder). I planned a beach day today but it’s chilly and foggy so I rewatched this instead. I still don’t remembers seeing it, which was fine because I enjoyed it with fresh eyes. Now I think it’s actually better with the actor swaps. Still so Gilliam. Gilliam has had my attention all the way through. Ever since python. And he still does, even if my memory fails me.
