When deciding to rent a film do you go by the appeal of Steve Carrell or the lack of appeal of Dane Cook? I chose Steve, much to my dismay. Although Dane Cook had little to do with the wretchedness of this film.
Steve plays Dan a widowed father of three who writes a newspaper column about everyday problems. I'm only guessing because this job never factors into the story line. Unless the movie makers were making that subtle he can deal with other peoples problems, he just can't deal with his own. And that story line has never been done to death before.
So, Dan and his three daughters head off to Rhode Island to spend what seems the rest of their lives at Dan's parents house. It's the writers idea of what a family should be. Everybody is quirky. There are lots of brothers and sistsers. The only one I'm sure is a brother is Dane Cook. The rest of the brothers come off as gay but they appear to have spouses and many children. I think some of the women are sisters but it's not important enough to the film makers to delineate this either.
Dan hasn't had a girlfriend since his wife died. But he happens to find the woman of his dreams played by Juliette Binoche. She needs to work on her fake american accent. They meet hilariously at the book store in town when Dan pretends to be a clerk and gives books to Juliette. Then they spend a romantic hour in this little built for the movie seating area over looking the water where Dan spills his guts about himself. They only quit when Juliette gets a phone call to go meet her boyfriend.
Can you guess who the other man in Juliette's life is? Hmmmm? If you said Dane Cook, you could have written this movie as well, maybe better.
Nuttiness follows as Dan mopes around the house as the family falls in love with Dane Cook's new love of his life. And everyone keeps asking what's wrong with Dan. Ah, humour. The tables turn though when Dan double dates with Dane and Juliette and woman that Dan's mother has set him up with. They refer to the woman remembered from childhood as pignose. Naturally Juliette becomes jealous when Dan spends time with pignose who turns out to be very attractive.
It was at this point, I threw in the towel. Steve Carell, you failed me.
