The Republic of Love

Last spring I was invited to be part of a festival in Vienna. It was a theater, dance, music and
literature festival and the theme was the rise of fascism in Europe. They asked me to do a two hour
talk on the relationship of government and love. I don’t often get assignments but this one was
irresistible. Since then this talk has taken several forms, all called The Republic of Love.

The Republic of Love with Sexmob and guests is a collection of songs and stories about the current
state of America, with some history thrown in. It features several of my songs– among them Big
Science and Language Is A Virus– that have new meanings in 2026. It also features the words and
thoughts of many Americans from Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, John Cage, Gertrude Stein, William S.
Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. The Republic of Love is a celebration of freedom.

Just saw this. I emailed Laurie and told her that the Rio is 4 blocks from our bungalow. Stacy immediately said not to invite her over. It's the weekend of my fav fest, Monterey Jazz, but I can skip out on some of that for Laurie. I have this fantasy interview that I want to do with her.

Can I be your sound guy for that interview? I can press record on your phone and stop when the interview is over.

Laurie replied within the hour saying 'great!!!' and then 'see you then!'

If I can introduce you, I will. I introduced her to my +1 when she played SF Jazz. Stacy gets my +1 this time, assuming that comes together.

Heard back from Laurie. She says she's looking forward to seeing me. I may buy tickets soon because she hasn't offered comps. She sent me her cell (which I already had). I offered my services in any way shape or form and also pitched an interview. I know the owner of the Rio, Lawrence. I know him through the dog parks because sometimes he walks his dog when I walk Yuki. We chatted about this show a few months back.

Laurie's name is up on the Rio marquee now.

The Santa Cruz show is sold out.

Laurie is comping me 2 tix. Stacy initially said she wasn't into going but I'm going to check in with her again, just to be sure.

Stacy finally agreed to going. She may leave early because it’ll surely go past her bedtime. But it’s a short walk home.
I haven’t heard from Laurie about any extra curricular activities. I’ll be at Monterey Jazz Fest that morning unless she says otherwise. I’m curious where she’s staying.

Laurie’s too busy to connect. Big load in for the Rio. She said she’ll see us tonight.

Laurie playing reggae? Yes please.

We got seats in the front row and then Stacy noticed the speakers were right next to us so she bailed. She carefully pulled apart her gold circle wristband and gave it to tg, then retreated to the back of the theater. Tg joined me up front about 10 ft from Laurie’s keys. Not sure when Stacy left; she wasn’t planning to stay because she’s usually in bed soon after sundown.

Laurie’s show was more relevant than ever, packed with political commentary. Sex Mob was her back up band and they were strong, jazzy, worked well for me coming out of MJF.

Bumped into several friends, Sparky (a psych nurse from rock med), DJ Kai Dragon, Julia’s dad (who ironically I bumped into the last dime I saw Laurie when we were coming out of MOMA (he was so impressed), Michael (a center who worked rock med for a bit but then settled into ushering).

Caught a quick few minutes with Laurie at the end.  Good to connect again, even if it was fleeting. She was so polite, even though her car was waiting.

D00M in the front row. As it should be.
