it's not gathering any dust. cf's book is on top of it in the TBR pile. his gets priority because his is autographed...

Actually no. It was something one of my SJSU fencing teammates said to me once and it really stuck with me for some reason. That must've been the early 80s, back when Calvin Harris was probably a baby. Maybe he got it from her.

A lovely day in SF. Saw many old friends. Apparently I’m still on the programming committee. More later.

There was a VIP party at the museum for Jeff Chang’s new book Water Mirror Echo, a 500+ page take on Bruce Lee from the Asian American perspective. I was invited as a guest by the creativity director, Justin Hoover, and got a shout out from stage from the panel for my work with KFTC. I was surprised to learn Jeff was a long time reader of my work. Adisa Banjoko, an old friend who ran the Hip Hop Chess Federation was also on the panel and we got to reconnect after not seeing each other since the pandemic. Also had a nice chat with the museum director, Walter Lim, and touch base with a Shaolin cousin Sheldon Call. There were dim sum pastries, three kinds of tea and chi drinks. Treated myself to some egg tarts. Yum.

The One Family Block Party was on two closed off blocks on Waverly street. There was an odd selection of booths: Pro-prop 50, arts & crafts, the SF library, signing booths for Jeff & another author who wrote something on Pancho Villa, and oddly, a mushroom gummy & thc syrup booth. When I went to check that out, the vendor asked ‘r u Gene?’ Turns out he’s a martial artist and fan who follows my socials and was also one of the peeps who established the Shroom church on the Haight. His name is Max and we had a lovely chat about martial arts & drugs. Some of my friends demonstrated and two others i hadnt seen in a while, Dave Wei, a Wudang guy who I hadnt seen since the pandemic (he’s had a precocious kid and both he and his wife have put on a lot of ‘rent weight) & Troy Dunwood, who I’ve seen a few times recently. Again great catching up. There were some martial arts demos and some live music. Most notably was DJ Qbert who is a seminal mixologist - got to chat with him a bit which was cool.
I took a break for lunch at Lucky Vegetarian, which I haven’t eaten at since the AFS days. It’s still the same, barely a restaurant, randomly cluttered in that old skool Chinatown way, but doing a brisk business in fake meats and mooncakes. I had chow fun, which they do in a classic canton style, and reminded me of eating it with my dad - it was a mutual fav. But in stereotypic ameri-canton cuisine style, i was hungry again soon afterwards.
All in all, a wonderful day in Chinatown. Then over to Japantown for a Mo show. https://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFo...p?tid=8601
