The Warfield

sndck: passenger - first listened to recording, then played, then wharf rat. took some pics, got trapped in the speakeasy, but that was good since dm had not indulged in the speakeasy so in a spell. nice way to say goodbye, for that will surely change. skulls & roses 1st set, dead set, 2nd & 3rd. sikiru sitting in on rhythm devils. henry kaiser on 3rd. m&j on the rail. an amazing stranger>franklin's shift, like a balloon popping and they went from one jam to the other. otherwise, the weakest show in the run so far musically. much cooler = much quieter @ rock med. the night before someone showed us a exit door, that is clearly marked but we never knew. never used it. a late discovery, by say, 20 years. maye we'll use it tonight. there's been a rumor that the speakeasy connects to the crazy horse next door, but dm has never been able to find it. show ended at 1:30 am.

no one is quite sure what is happening tonight. there's a rumor that no one wants to move the booze to the fillmore, so we should just drink it all. food & drinks will be served. show @ 8. afterparty invites were for 11.

the final song, and we bid you goodnight, ended around 3:30 am. the afterparty was already in full swing, but it really kicked in 50 minutes later. i left at dawn, caught about half an hour sleep with the dog yapping in the yard.

now i'm at work.

i'm not as young as i used to be, that's for sure.

sdchk: larry & jackie jamming acoustic, larry on violin.
set 1: bobby, phil, molo: come together/dark star/loose lucy/west la/wheel + larry & jeff chimenti, lovelight
set 2: jackie & larry acoustic. deep elem, some fast fiddling, warfield waltz, ?please come home? (larry on mandolin) goodnight irene, i'll see you in my dreams.
set 3: pl&f 2008. shakedown, ball & chain, mississippi? ran a complicated ipr call and lost track - althea? stella blue/sugaree + mark karan
set 4: skinny singers? jackie and tim blum (mother hips) and some woman singer. very bluegrass.
set 5: sugar mag (balloon drop) terrapin>rider probably more that got lost in the chaos.
e: truckin, and we bid you good night.

the show was hugely chaotic. grabbing the last moments with friends. lots of people showed up that i hadn't seen in years. it was very bittersweet.

last supper was garlic shrimp topped salmon, cheese tortilini, asparagus, breaded broccoli, finger potatoes, green salad with beets & artichoke hearts (went with the caesar dressing). there was a huge chocolate mousse cake that said 'fare the well, fare the well, we love you more than words can say'. say? everyone caught the lyric mistake. after all, that doesn't even rhyme. god i'll miss backstage dinners at the warfield.

along with the pentatych posters, there was another warfield commemorative poster and commemorative rolling papers. i wish i had grabbed more of those...

i'm still vibrating, from lack of sleep, no doubt. driving is really hard. thinking is harder. interacting with my officemates is challenging, but they're leaving me alone since i'm so grouchy. i remember chanting 'if t get home before daylight i just might get some sleep tonight' it wasn't the first time i've done that, but it's been a long time since i was in that position. i didn't make it. the sun was shining brightly by the time i got home, but what a way to see sunrise....

i hung with the afterparty for an hour or so. they were playing jerry, then they switched to jonny cash, and i decided to make a break for it before getting caught in the monday commute. now it's just another hour or so and i'll go home and sleep some more.

I have more to say about this but I don't have the time. I'm switching over to the memorial day thread for my blog

it's a blog on the run.

There was a mysterious pool of blood in my bathroom. Monday night, I came home and took a much needed shower. Later, I found blood all over the bathroom floor and carpet. It was a significant amount, maybe half a cup. I quickly inspected my body for open wounds but found nothing but a mysterious stigmata-like bruise on my left forearm (I had noticed that earlier in the Warfield run, but it's small and doesn't hurt so I wrote it off to standard unclaimed injuries). I don't remember bleeding from any orifices and there was no blood on my clothes. Very odd. Perhaps the cat ate something in there, but that would be a first. There was nothing but blood. No fur or feathers. The cat usually just brings in live snakes (as you know) but the dog has thwarted that this spring, thankfully.

No use worrying about spilled blood now.

It's the demonic Pom making his real self known. I told you that avatar needs blinking red eyes....not so cute now, is it!

The Pom doesn't have access to that bathroom. I found more blood on my bath towel when I did the wash. It definitely came out of me. Unless there's a cut hidden in my hair, it came from an orifice, since there's no big scabs anywhere and it was a fair amount of blood. It did a body check but found nothing out of the ordinary. They say it's a sign of addiction when you accumulate unaccountable injuries.

Seen on the Warfield's fb, posted yesterday.

From a vaudeville theater with acts such as Charlie Chaplin on stage to a center of San Francisco's rock n' roll scene with legends like Grateful Dead and The Clash playing the stage, we are happy to keep the music alive and well today

Didn't you say there's an abandoned speakeasy down below?

A good time to bring out the Warfield 360-degree virtual tour:

This guy says: "Well, it turns out, the place was a speakeasy. Not just any speakeasy, Al Capone’s speakeasy!"

I know that speakeasy so well. Rock Med was stationed right next to it. Those murals are delightful. There’s also a topless gal - kinda Betty boopish, next to that monkey.

She doesn't look Boop-ish (said the Boop Meanie):

Fair.

I wasn’t sure how best to describe the images. Art nouveau prohibition style?

That’s a different image than the one I was thinking of.

It's art deco...

the pictures in that article are beautiful. I really want to see that in person sometime.

Art nouveau is more round and organic whilst deco is more linear and geometric, although I’ll defer to KB as art is his trade. I studied deco and nouveau back when I did the AFS catalogs because SF has so many architectural elements, including the Warfield style (The mural above the stage is far more nouveau) and I tried to imbue that into the borders. The frames for that pages were my flailing attempt to fuse Art Deco and playing card styles (specifically spades and in swords to spades). No one really got that which was my failing as an artist but it wasn’t to be my path in the end anyway. That’s when I was working the Warfield constantly. It was a nice walk from AFS and I could Bart home. They fed me a good dinner, gave crew a drink after the show, and we partied in the speakeasy during breaks. Those were outrageous blurry daze… this is why I’m not always sure if I’ve seen certain artists because I wasn’t keeping track and worked a ridiculous amount of Warfield shows. Sometimes I’ll come across a poster or crack&peel pass and think ‘wow… I was at this?’

Unfortunately those speakeasy murals are hard to see now. The last time I was there was 2016 - http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...p?tid=3903 - and the speakeasy was packed with storage junk, obscuring more of the wall space. Maybe it’s different now but unlikely.
