Anyone know anything about this? Den is asking me on my hot take... (03-10-2021, 03:53 PM)Greg Wrote: It's not Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
I have no idea but Netflix is going everywhere for content these days.
Den has tasked me to look into this. My comic sifu Patrick says it's all about Frank Quitely art and that it's the Michael Bay version of Watchmen.
The first issue is free here: https://imagecomics.com/read/jupiters-legacy
All the issues are available via Hoopla. I LUV HOOPLA.

Got through issue #1 (very short) and to chapter 4 of issue #2 (150+ pages). It definitely has a Watchmen vibe, only a tad more political as they are addressing race riots and Ayn Rand appears.
It's got a clean comic art style. The superhero superpowers have yet to be well defined. So far so good, but only a few fights and nothing extraordinary.
This is the first time I've borrowed a comic from Hoopla and it works quite rather when I switch to tablet mode. I can only borrow movies for 3 days but comics for 21 days.

Quite rather, indeed.

The superheroes got their powers by going to an island seen in a vision. Now they are old and grey and the next gen of superheroes are rising. One goes rogue and supports race rioters in LA. Another, the daughter of superheroes, has imposter issues. In the shadow of her parents, she endorses ventures for fame and falls into drugs. A Superman-like character spoils his Lois with trips to Jupiter’s moon where he finds an abandoned alien city underground with women sort of mystery beacon.
Not many fights yet. Mostly talking in tights and capes.

So it turns out that the free issue was the 1st issue in V3. That messed me up a little because after reading that, I read V2, then V3 (realizing quickly that I'd already read V3 chapter 1), then circled back around to V1. Fortunately, the story moves about in time so even though I've read it non-linearly so far, it's okay.
It's a lot like Watchmen. There's a band of superheroes fighting global threats, but it's more about their interpersonal issues and the invading aliens, supervillains and what have you are peripheral. It starts at the Great Depression and there's this overarching theme of the American Dream where the superheroes deal with things like homosexuality, sex scandals, the end of capitalism, lothario superheroes, alter ego disguises, drugs, suicide, living up to superhero parents, and so on. The story spans decades and the comic art echoes the style of comics of the period, with a contemporary flair. The latest time period is post-apocalypse when superheroes take over the government and it all backfires.
It's an engaging read and the art has its moments of brilliance. It reads well on my tablet.
Sword fights. Well, one obtuse one with foils no less where the fencers end up running nekkid through the park - It reminded DM of carefree days in SOMA with the Yeti.
The comic isn't DOOM recommended but it may well make for a decent Netflix binge. I didn't get into The Boys and I didn't see the new Watchmen that got such rave reviews, and this might come off as a knock off in their wake. Honestly, I don't know enough about comics to say - they all seem a bit derivative to me, just like all Kung Fu movies are kinda the same.
I'm saving V4 for Saturday night.

Finished V4. That was a bit of alright. Frank Quitely's art is magnificent. Storywise it's highly derivative of The Watchmen, but after consulting with my comic sifu and former senior graphic artist Patrick, the explosion of the superhero trope is commonplace in the wake of that gamechanger. I'm thinking it's Netflix's play to have a good comic show, now that it's Marvel shows are done. What can this might add over The Watchmen and The Boys is a psychedelic aspect. Some of the superheroes have this power to control the minds of others by sending them into hallucinations. It distracts them while their being beat up in the real world. It plays out well in the comic - if that can be translated into the series, I'm all in.
One cool aspect is that even those this is an alternate reality, there are funny cameos of historic celebs like Kate Hepburn, Reagan, etc.
It's written by Mark Millar, who gave us Kick Ass, Kingsman, Civil War, Logan, and many others.
So I think this does have potential. But we shall see.

The interview went rather well. I’m a fan so we had much to chat about and we even discovered we had a mutual friend. He didn’t drop that many pearls - I suspect he’s not too used to be interviewed so - but I dug enough out of him for the article.
I’m eager to get the transcripts back and dig into the reporting.

Okay. This has finally made it onto my radar. That probably has a lot to do with it appearing today on Netflix. After seeing the trailer my interest went from mild to meh. It doesn't look all that good.

I'll probably start digging into it this weekend. I didn't get a screener for the work I did for this, plus it's all in that print issue and I don't know if they'll drop it on Den's website or not.
Like I said, the comic was very derivative of Watchmen but it added this generational dimension that might be interested. Again, it'll all be about the fights for me because that was the topic of my interview.

I'll binge the whole thing. After reading the comic, I feel obligated. If you wait, I'll cherry-pick the best ep (meaning the one with the best fight scene because you'll just want to fast forward to that).

Just picked up my copy of the latest Den of Geek print issue.
My lord. Jupiter's Legacy spent a ton on this.
There's a Special Edition mini-issue polybagged with the main issue (featuring my interview with the choreographer - you can read the digital version here - https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/jupiters-le...-magazine/) and they bought out C2, C3, and the first page for ads.
They must have paid for the whole thing and then some - which means they put some money in my pocket too.
Yeah, I'll binge it all. I hope it's successful so they can pay for more.

I really liked that hallway fight in Daredevil. I may have to go back and look up the stairway fight.
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.
