The Flight Attendant (2020 HBO Max)
#1
This is a comedy murder mystery with Kaley Cuoco (Big Bang Theory) as an ever partying jetsetting flight attendant. Rosey Perez plays a flight attendant buddy. Episode one opens with her waking up in Bangkok next to a dead man. She's a blackout drunk and the story unfolds with a lot of Memento/Hangover feel. She constantly drops into mind-trip conversations with her dead date which moves the story along. One other affectation of the series are the multi-frame (a la comic book panel) transitions between scenes. They mostly work and are not distracting (except now I've pointed them out so...don't think of an elephant).

Scottish assassin lady has been dropped into the mix...

The first 3 episodes dropped at once. 2 more dropped yesterday (thursday), with new episodes coming on subsequent thursdays.

It's pretty compelling. I'm enjoying it.

No sword fights yet.

I spent the evening with Rosie Perez. Srsly.

She was in the celebratory circle of Shi Yanming, the Shaolin monk that's with Wu-Tang Clan. Yanming hired me to write cover stories on him for KFTC and IKF back when I was freelance. He flew me out to NYC, lodged me with one of his students, and took care of me for a week. I trained with his school and we partied with various celebs, ate at great Manhattan restaurants, and even went to the Met (with Michelle Forbes - Ensign Ro from Star Trek).

My meeting with Rosie was odd. We had gone to some hip hop happening and wound up at someone's apartment. This was the late 90s and I only knew her marginally from Fearless mostly. Yanming's sig0 & manager got us some alone time, but she kind of sprang it on me suddenly so I was unprepared (and tired and drunk). We chatted a bit but I didn't have the wherewithal to do an interview (we were training and partying every night, training, and I was also writing those two cover stories, and y'all know how exhausting NYC can be). Rosie gave me a folder of material but it didn't have a contact and I never followed up, although I thought about it many times because that folder sat in my files for years (might have even still been there when KFTC closed). We never crossed paths again.

Rosie was exactly like she appears. She had that outrageous accent and was super hot. I remember Yanming was into eating raw garlic back then as a therapeutic. He convinced her to try one that night and that was quite funny. I can't remember much more about that gathering. Rosie was nice tho - friendly and open - but her breath...

Kelley Cuoco of Big Bang Fame plays the titular Flight Attendant in this eight episode series.

Kelley plays Carrie who is a drunken mess of a flight attendant. Like most alcoholics in films she shows little sign of the ravages of the disease. She also sleeps with pretty much every man she meets. Obviously there is something going wrong in her life even before the inciting incident. She meets a man on the flight to Bangkok. They go out. She gets blackout drunk. They end up at his hotel. She wakes up next to his dead body. Problems ensue.

From that point on, Carrie makes every mistake you could possibly make. She also goes on a quest to recreate the night of the murder to find out who did it.

tQ and I binged 3 of the episodes because they were intriguing. There are lots of pieces in place and everybody, at this point, has a motive for killing the guy.

It was very enjoyable. At times it feels like Big Bang's Penny is caught up in a murder mystery but then there are flashbacks to Carrie's childhood to let you know there is more to Carrie's life.

Shoot, I'm the mod of this here forum but I cannot find the merge button at the moment. Maybe I'll try again after the caffeine kicks in a little more.

Actually, you weren't a moderator for this section until about 7pm last night so you would have been unable to see the controls. At seven was the time I switched it over just to mess with you.

This is the way.

Finished this up. The show got to this really interesting place where Penny, er Carrie finally reaches bottom in her drinking and is melting down. But then the episode basically drops all that depth for a foray into buddy cop land and the issue with her problems is dropped for two episodes.

It all does resolve nicely. There is a happy ending to the alcoholism story line. But it all comes across as really trite.

So, the series started strong and limped into the ending.
