Arnel Pineda leaves the slums of the Philippines to become the lead singer of Journey after Neal Schon sees Arnel's video on youtube. Well, that's the thread of the movie. Pineda wasn't quite as obscure a singer as the doc makes it out to be. He did have some reputation winning talent competitions in Asia as well as releasing a couple of Albums.
Not a lot of drama to this documentary. My question after they talked about how Schon found Pineda on the internet was what were they going to talk about next. Especially since it was about minute 19 of the 90 minute movie. A lot of the movie deals with the bands life on the road with a little history of the band thrown in. Lots of backstage shots of Pineda drinking tea, taking care of his throat, and interacting with the band. There's not a lot of Journey in the movie, it mostly focuses on Pineda. But it was a nice slice of life on the road with a big rock band. They showed up at Shoreline and at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. I kept hoping I would see DM in the background at Shoreline.
I also thought Pineda cracked under the pressure and fled back to the Philippines at one point. But that story wasn't covered in the movie. If there was any darkness to the story, it's not covered. He does allude to the perils of being on the road, ie drugs and women, but the film never shows any of that. It's all very wholesome tea drinking and evian drinking.
It was a nice if slight movie about a Journey tour. Cheap Trick and Heart were also on that tour but only Ann Wilson is shown and briefly at that.
