SF Giants - Bruce Lee Tribute Night 09/04
#61
I had several hippies on tap for the extra, but they have all bailed. I'll try pass it along to one of my many Giant-fan coworkers, or sell it there.

Just talked to Greg via phone. How archaic, right? All systems go for tonight and LA.

See you all soon, DOOMers!

You'll meet him soon - he runs the Tiger Claw booth at TCKFMC.

I'm treating him for this one - good work relations - so it works out in the end. Thanks again, ed - we'll see y'all soon!

Actually not until a good while after Shannon sings...

Thanks, ED. And it was great to see the lot of you.

Cranefly has it right. Thanks, Mr. El Dingo, thanks very much. I hope we do it again next year.

I called my mom this morning. I asked her if she recalled that baseball game I went to as a kid. Without missing a beat she said it was in Detroit, the Tigers and Yankees, and it went 22 innings. She thought it was back around 1960. That was enough for me to track it down online (FYI, the web holds a wee bit of baseball info).

June 24, 1962. The Yankees prevailed 9 to 7. I had thought it ended 1 to 0 on a homer. Still, it’s not surprising it gave me that impression. All the scoring came early. 6 to 3 after the first, knotted at 7 apiece at the end of six. After that there were 15 scoreless innings. Occasionally there would be a long ball that would bring everyone to their feet, followed by a collective groan as some fielder nabbed it. By then it no longer mattered which team prevailed. It was now spectators versus baseball players.

I remember suffering an injury on one of those long balls. I had stood up along with everyone else, and when the fielder ran back and caught it on the warning track, I groaned and sat down sharply. But the man behind me was still standing, and he had his hand resting on the back on my seat, and he was holding a cigarette. I jumped at the sudden fiery pain and slapped at the back on my neck, and the man apologized profusely. I had a scab for months afterward.

It’s odd I don’t remember many other the details of that outing. My mom recalls it far better than I do. It was my dad’s birthday. His brother Bud had the idea of our respective families going to the game together. We took two cars. (I do remember wanting to invite Lady Cranefly along, but on that particular day she was suffering a severe case of youngness -- exactly one month old, drooling in a crib in Missoula.)

Looking at the online stats, I see that there were some big-time players in the game. People like Maris and Mantle, Berra. Lots of the players batted 9 times. One of them batted 11 times. Each team used 7 pitchers.

We got home at about 3 in the morning. My mom had to get up at 5 to go bake pies at her mother’s restaurant. My great uncle Argyl came into the restaurant that morning. He was a noted hunter/trapper/fisher in the region and something of a braggart. He was always stopping in at our place with a great horned owl he’d caught in a trap, or a 21-pound carp from the river, or a huge snapping turtle. Anyway, that morning he said to my mom, “Did you hear about that crazy game in Detroit last night that went 22 innings?” And my mom had the pleasure of telling him yes, she had been at the game.

I do recall one other thing about the game. As we were walking out of the stadium, I was thinking, “Someday I’ll have to go another game -- but not right away.”
True to my word, just over 50 years later I’ve gone to another game -- though it felt short at 11 innings.

Wednesday was pretty much a coma day after I dropped tQ at the house and then dropped DM at the Mousehouse. My coma was indeed deep. But it was worth it. The only thing that would have made it better would have been a W instead of an L. C'est La Vie.

I found out there were a ton of restaurants I need to eat it along 2nd st. And a book store that should be visited called Alexander's. The big restuarant find was the American Grilled Cheese Restaurant. I hope it tastes as great as it sounds. DM and Cranefly really need to work on their ball catching skillz since two balls landed on them during warm up. I also learned it is really dangerous to stand in the bleachers during BP.

I was disappointed by my ice cold garlic fries. It was a shame the Yeti did not get his Bobble Heads. My problem at the moment is what do I do with the cool box the Bobble head came in?

The first couple of innings the game was very quiet since we staked the D-Backs to an early lead. But they came back which is always good. I just wish they could have taken the lead. And I know that I really wanted them to finish the game in the ninth so I could go back to the JW Marriot and catch some sleep before the trip back to Los Angeles.

The Seagulls were very Hictchkockian. good thing they just wanted food instead of eyeballs. And it is funny when they poop on other spectators instead of us.

I only got lost two times going to DM's house to pick him up. I think the road signs should be more assertive when pointing out directions. Yes, the one sign said this was the 880 to Fremont, but not demonstrably so, ergo I didn't take that route and wound up on the 980 in Oakland.

Poor tQ had to listen to DM swap stories for six hours on the ride south. The sigh of relief she blew when she exited the car at Lynch Manor shook the leaves on the trees.

Here are some pics that didn't make it to Facebook.

That was a fun night. Especially with "Bonus Innnings".

I'm still ticked about Yeti not getting a bobblehead.

This is from the website FAQ:

Am I guaranteed to receive the special event giveaway item?
Yes, with a few conditions. Unlike gate giveaways, where only the first 20,000 or so fans receive the promo item, every fan that purchases a special event ticket will be guaranteed the giveaway item (unless otherwise specified with a specific limit). Items are only guaranteed if claimed on the day of the special event, within the specified time frame on the voucher (usually before the end of the 5th inning).

Although, she doesn't use it as a compliment. More along the lines of 'I spent another sleepless night listening to the thunder'
