Fire on the mountain!

I use Purpleair.com

I went for a ride yesterday, and one of the areas was 300+. My lungs did hurt.
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.

IQair says we're at 80. PurpleAir says 226, which is more accurate. Smoky skies in every direction and strong smoke smell whenever any door is opened. Another day stuck inside.

PurpleAir by default doesn't focus on woodsmoke.  In the image below, where you see LRAPA, that's the correct selection to measure woodsmoke.  Then it should more closely match AirNow.  By default that dropdown has None as its choice.

Here's an article explaining it.

Not that I'm necessarily endorsing it's accuracy.

If PurpleAir doesn't measure wood smoke, you'd think it'd be less that IQAir.

635 structures now destroyed.

Soquel is now in the top four worst air qualities in the nation.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (KRON) – Authorities have arrested a man for stealing a Cal Fire firefighter’s wallet and using a credit card in Santa Cruz County, according to the sheriff’s department.
The suspect, identified as Brian Johnson of Live Oak, admitted to using the stolen credit card and wrote an apology to the firefighter.
Johnson has been arrested on four felony counts, including grand theft, credit card theft, forgery, and possession of the stolen property.
When officials located Johnson, they found the clothing he was wearing in the surveillance photos along with the items he purchased with the credit card.
The firefighter was battling the CZU Lightning Complex fires when the theft occurred.

Had an odd flashback to Dan - ironic because he started this thread.

The fire smoke has been so bad that we’ve been clinging to the air filter he sold me years ago when he was slinging air filters. It’s served us well over the years (I suffer wicked allergies sometimes as y’all know). We’ve named it R2 because it’s about that size and we just ordered another replacement filter for it. Dan sold a lot of crazy stuff over the years - this was the best thing I ever bought from him.

Quote:Update: 9/1/2020: PurpleAir will soon feature a 3rd correction factor specifically created by the EPA. In the meantime, EPA recommends that you use AQandU instead of LRAPA, especially if the AQI is higher than 150. From the EPA: “The US EPA correction will be available on PurpleAir.com as a selection shortly. Until then, the AQ&U correction more closely matches our correction throughout a wide range of concentrations while LRAPA shows significant underestimation above 65 ug/m3 [150 AQI].”

If you’re curious about the EPA formula, see note #5 at the end of this article.

It was clear today - blue sky by the sea - but we could still smell smoke. Smelled like campfires, like Yosemite Valley car campgrounds. Yesterday I replaced the air filter in R2 (LB's aforementioned mega filter). My sinuses feel a bit raw.

When I was in Svale, it was clearish, but the sunset was that smoke orange-red. The sunset looked normal here in the Cruz yesterday.

Yikes. I just saw that fire in Mercer. Looks about 30 miles from Lynch lair?

We got at least two fires near me. And by near, I mean 50 miles away. We cool. But the air is thick with smoke. The moon. straight over the house, is completely orange.

Good thing it's only going to be 111 degrees here today. Although, the smoke cover might alleviate that a bit.

Don't plan your escape to the lair at the moment.

It looks like this. The lake near Oakhurst is about 45 miles from me.

How's your air quality?

We're clear here - blue sky and normal colored sunsets although we can still smell smoke occassionally. The heat wave isn't helping.

About 150, I believe. It's all above us, but the place reeks of smoke.
