SHAOLIN TRIPS by DM
#16
i had a nice post about where i was at and the web blinked. that's actually where i'm at. blinking in and out. 24 hours left of solitude. hope to get all the notes in place and knock out the larger original bits. the rest i can do on the fly over the next however long it takes.

i'm flashing back to ppfy & me writing our fencing thesi at the sjsu library.

there wasn't much left in the journals. by 99 (trip #4) i spent most of my time jotting down notes and it's all been published. that's good, since it'll be a lot easier. i'm almost done with trip #1. today is mostly trip #2 & 3. #4 was pretty well documented, so the rest is revision more than creation, which is a sconce simpler. i have about 9 hours left of solitude. i don't know when i'll get a break like this again - probably never. frankly, i don't have the vacation hours banked and i prefer to spend those on vacations with my family. that'll be tomorrow. so i'll pick up the rest in the corners, but i'll be as set for that as i can be by this evening. that's just the way it'll have to go.

dammit, did i just work all day on new years? that sets a poor precedent for '09, especially given the state of the martial economy.

it's been a fascinating experiment. i got off to a slow start, and nye was pretty disruptive, but also provided a good break. i thought i was going to need that mentally, but it was more physical. my body is the weak link. this keyboard is hard on the right hand, especially for editing/revising, since that's mostly cursor work. plus it has a double mouse. i usually mouse with my left to ward off rsi issues, but the right mouse is clear with a red l.e.d. so it catches my attention and gets used accidentally more. my back is torn up. i compensate for my chronic pain by taking it right between my scapula. there's a knot the size of a grapefruit there now.

thanks for the support, bros. i can totally feel the luv. Heart

Writing is an unnatural human endeavor. But it can be very rewarding. Glad to hear you've been able to embrace the unnatural the past week; not so glad to hear about the ailments.
Over the past week, I dusted off an old trunk story and have been trying to make it viable. The story is titled, "Trunk Story."
It's about a writer who dusts off an old trunk story and tries to make it work.
That's only the beginning of the recursiveness.
The writer is also teaching a writer's workshop where he's teaching that writing is an unnatural human endeavor -- but it can be very rewarding.
So essentially the story is filled with a lot of talk about how to write, which I think is my way of avoiding actually writing. Still, I think it's a step up from sharpening all the pencils in the house.
Did I mention I'm feeling very very rusty?
I'm definitely not hoarding the Muse. Good luck with Her, DM.

P.S. Do you need a better keyboard or mouse? I might have something lying around.

Congratulations on your endeavors. I promised myself I would get back to work on some screenplays today. This is as close as I've gotten.

I can't wait for my signed copy of the Drunk Monk's guide to Shaolin.

so things are progressing - still some heavy lifting to go tho. it's those unwritten chapters that are bogging me down.

i'm now thinking of retitling the work-in-progress Albatross.

I'm squeezing in a few minutes here and there, occassionally getting a good hour or two off on the albatross. I think I've covered most all the missing chapters. Now it's just weaving together the remaining pieces so that they are somewhat cohesive. That goes a lot faster then having to generate stuff. I keep coming across stuff I've already written elsewhere, so now it's a memory trip in hopes that I don't get too repetative. Those should pop out more when I actually get the albatross collated and some readers to check my flow. Any other volunteers for that?

It's coming together very bass-ackward. I don't formalize my stronger ideas until later, so I keep finding myself writing something, then finding it's actually a rewrite of something I already did, only later. Trying to make this somewhat linear is the biggest challenge, because I'm not really a linear thinking and all of my previous writing is formulaic and episodic. So there's a ton of repetitive shit.

Thanks for the support, bros...

repetitive shit made Phillip Glass a genius.

Hmmmm...I don't know if that was comforting or not.

I'll still read the fuck out of it.
