Wicked For Good (2025)
If you disliked part 1, you will absolutely detest part 2. The original movie cast reprises their roles and this time with a bigger budget, so bigger sets, more lavish costumes, more extras and lots more cgi effects. It’s garish - hurt my retinas watching it, so much so that I took more time gazing at my phone than watching the screen. I still think the actors are well cast in a vapid way. It’s broadway so it’s shallow as long as the main players can sing - which were really only three with the pipes. I kept wanting this to make more political commentary. Baum had a lot of political satire and this had potential for that with the subjugation of the talking animals (very Narnia), the munchkin travel ban, and the green colored outsider. Plus the white privileged of Glinda working so well with Grande but they glossed over all that and leaning into spectacle. The creation stories behind the witch of the east, the tinman, the lion and the scarecrow don’t quite fit canon but they make for passing plot points. Even the building of the yellow brick road is explained. So many cgi animals. And Dorothy is in play but we only see her slippers and Toto. This got way more accolades and earned a much higher box office than it deserved. Pop culture - gotta at least tune in enough to understand how we end up with presidents like we do.
