Finally got here. I was inspired by Bi Gan’s new film, Resurrection, out now & my criterion elxkring (turns out i have one more day…)
Cf pretty much nails this in his pre pandemic review. I’ll add tht this was Bi Gan’s breakout film and he used Non-actors, including his uncle in the lead role who genuinely was a former gangster irl. Bi Fan can move a camera and the 41 min oner (towards the end of the film) is mind blowing. It captures a China that I’ve caught glimpses of in my travels there, the common folk, the non-tourist stuff. Admittedly theres a lot of scootering about (which is a beautiful way to show the village) but that barber stall - it’s exactly like where I got my head shaved in ‘98, right down to the plastic rinsing bucket and the peeling magazine glamour pages glued to the dilapidated cement walls.
I really want to see Resurrection in a theater but doubt I can make it happen because it won’t be there long. But it’s getting rave reviews so I’ll have to see it someday…
