a very dark historical drama about the commandant of Auschwitz and his family and their life, living next door to the camp. It's told I'm a very matter of fact manner, following Rudolf Hoss in his day to day activities...meetings, phone calls, playing with the children, issues with work.
The very first 2 min have this haunting choral cacophony over black screen. I thought they the streaming was having problems and that I was getting audio, but no video. I restarted the movie twice before I figured it out.
There is no music in the film. Just the sounds of the camp in the background - distant yelling, shooting, screaming, but so far away or muffled, that it barely registers.
There are a couple intercut scenes shot in negative with more haunting audio, but no commentary at all...
Then, the drama just stops and it switches to cleaning ladies at the modern Auschwitz memorial and a very mundane view into their work, but also showing us the extent of Auschwitz's impact.
It's slow, and hard to watch. It feels voyeristic maybe? Or there's a feeling of helplessness?
