The final frontier.
S5 begins with a 2 ep drop. There’s an 800 year old Romulan ship that holds the key to tech from the race that created life (or something like that) and Disco reassembles the crew for a Red Directive (some federation pull out all stops mission).
Disco confines with its over the top ST visions - it’s the most advanced ST time wise so crew can beam anywhere without a transporter, summon phasers to appear in their hands as needed, create hologram schematics from the wrist tricorders, stand on ships flying at warp speed with magnetized boots as long as the warp bubble holds, materialize space suits as soon as they are ejected into space, and get coffee replicated anywhere they ask, to name a few.
There’s a sentimental last away mission with Michael & Saru where all they can dwell on is that this is the end whilst ancient tomb guardian drones attack them.
No Jett Reno, but she’s mentioned as the person who came up with the nickname ‘action Saru’. Cronenberg returns to his role as Kovich, the shady powerful Starfleet dude. The special effects are still grand, but the essential plot isn’t that inspired. Seems like more of an excuse to run around the galaxy. But fwiw, it’s inspired by some Picard contact from back in the day.
I’ll see this through. Fresh eps every Thursday.
