Surrogate Valentine (2011)
#1
Another in my Dave Boyle research. Goh Nakamura, a Bay Area indie guitarist, plays a fictionalized version of himself, touring the west coast. A lot is set in LA, SF, Portland & Seattle - SF gets the best showing. It's in artsy B&W (artsy as in low budget).

This too was very enjoyable. Goh is a music teacher and hired to prep a vacuous TV actor for a role playing him. He takes him on tour and the two have a sort of quirky buddy flick. Again, there are good characters in funny awkward situations. I did lol for real. Goh has a great presence, not just as a musician, but as a neurotic guitarist. It's dialog based, with interspersed relavent songs by Goh. It's a small film, very small, but it has heart.

This is part one of a trilogy, all surrounding Goh. I started part 2, Daylight Savings, last night too. Part 3, I will make you mine, isn't directed by Boyle.
