This falls into a gray area where I suspected I'd seen it but was not sure. I've started watching other movies recently that I realized I'd seen before. It's maddening. With so much stuff out there to see...
But I hadn't seen this before, and even if I had, I probably couldn't have turned it off--what with Wong Kar Wai's direction and Christopher Doyle as cinematographer. And a cast of Maggie Cheung, Leslie Cheung, Andy Lau, Jackie Cheung, Tony Leung...
As Criterion describes it, the first full flowering of Wong Kar Wai's swooning signature style.
I'd seen In the Mood for Love and one or two others, but not this one. Everyone's so young, so melancholy... Tony Leung is handsome here; it predates his thinner hard-angled features that led him into villainous roles. Maggie is ... unearthly.
