Swamp Water (1941) by Jean Renoir
#1
The director's first American movie.

Against the advice of all, a young local named Ben goes in search of his hunting dog in the Okefenokee Swamp.  He gets hopelessly lost, but is saved by a fugitive from the law named Tom Keefer (a 45-ish Walter Brennan) hiding out there.  Tom was framed for murder and is actually a nice guy.  The two form a tight bond and start a trapping business, with Tom remaining the unknown partner while Ben does all the trading.  Back in town, Ben now takes an interest in Tom's daughter.  Eventually word leaks out about Tom's existence, and everything threatens to fall apart.

Man, I wasn't recognizing anyone.  I only realized it was Walter Brennan when he spoke.  John Huston?  Didn't recognize.  Anne Baxter?  Nope.  John Carradine?  Nope.  Dana Andrews?  Nope.  Ward Bond?  Sort of, but couldn't quite pin him.

All in all, a nice swampy tale right up my tributary.  Probably not yours.
