When you die, the singular soul is recycled into the past or future (relative to your time...the soul isn't time-aware). This is how we all share the same soul. This process repeats until the soul has walked with every being in existence at which time, the simulation ends and the answer to the question "42" will be known.

I've only seen it once, but when I left the theater after watching Mad Max Fury Road, I asked "What the hell just happened!"
