Interesting. It made Stacy anxious too. Strangely, it didn't bother me at all. Perhaps I can relate to it too well.
It did catch me totally off guard because I was making myself some dinner when it started and like I said, I thought it was some sort of doc about a drummer. I was half watching the beginning and when I finally got to sit down with my food, the sound part dropped and I was like 'whuh? wait. rewind!' So maybe that diluted the impact for me.
I liked Raci's performance too. Heard an interesting backstory on him and his career...maybe that was on NPR? Can;t remember now because I was only half listening.
Side note - The first director of Rock Med was fluent in ASL even though he could hear. He once did a talkdown in ASL which was amazing. Stupidly, we were restraining that poor dude, which didn't allow him to sign, but fortunately Director Charlie spotted his hand gestures and took over. Charlie used to say he felt ASL was more genuine because you really have to look at someone to communicate.
I also have an xgf who learned ASL after trippin on the ASL person at the Grateful Dead. She went on to become an educator and advocate and married some dude with hearing issues.
Stacy & Tara both learned the ASL alphabet. Stacy showed off that she could still do it to me when that scene came up in the movie.
