The Aspern Papers (2018)
#1
Another film that gets too artsy fartsy for its own good. It's based on some Henry James novel that I've never heard of and would be content to never hear of it again. Jon Rhys-Meyers is really weird throughout with a horridly stilted performance. Redgrave is masterful as always, yet there's not enough of her.  The other lead, Joely Richardson, was new to me.  She was good too but both actresses only show how horrible Jon is. Don't know why he's acting so affected in this.  Every line he says sounds like overacting.  On a positive note, it's set in Venice and the sets are magnificent.  Stacy recognized several locations and shared some more tales of when she and Tara continued in Europe after I had to return home.  The costumes are also stunning.  But neither is enough to redeem this snoozer.  No sword fights but some random knife stabbing that made no sense (maybe it was a dream sequence?) Not DOOM recommended at all, even for our setbuilder.
