The USOC requires all sports under the Olympic umbrella to comply with SafeSport. THe scandals that came out in US Swimming, later in gymnastics, then freakin’ *Everywhere* made them take notice.
I’m on the fencing Hall of Fame committee and one candidate was mooted and a former national team member wrote a letter to us about his behavior (and the immediate whitewashing of the whole thing by the then fencing powers-that-be) and now he has been booted.

In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.
