Since you showed me the thread on your forum about abusive instructors, I agree with you. 10 years ago I thought that other sports had a problem, but fencing was (mostly) cleaner. Now I know differently. Abuse of all kinds is everywhere.
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.
