The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
#1
This looked familiar when I saw it; I think it must have made some year end best of list a few years ago. The title says what its about: a golem (female) and a jinni (male, who is trapped in human form and can't remember how it happened). It's set in the tenements in Manhattan, late 19th century.

The cover said it was a first novel, and she did well. It was clever, the characters were well-drawn, and there was one plot twist I didn't see coming. It's big (almost 500 pp.) and lagged a bit at one point the middle, as long books often do. But I recommend it. I found it compelling enough to make me carve out some extra reading time.
