My wife was crying when I woke up. I was shocked as well. I was never super into Bowie, but I remember buying Low (because I was getting into Eno) and being blown away by it. And I have to say that every time I hear Ashes to Ashes I am somewhat stunned - it doesn't sound like anything of it's own time or this time either. That is genius. And it's not his only song like that.
Plus he was just super cool, and perhaps the only rock star who truly grew old gracefully. I saw a great interview a few years ago where he said (probably not an accurate quote) "I don't matter anymore. The young eat the old. It's the way culture works."
