The Oscar winner with a gimmick. It's in black and white! It's silent! If we love it, it will show we are artistic and high-brow.
It's the story of early days Hollywood when they transitioned from Silents to Talkies. George is a star of the silents. Peppy is a newcomer who George gives a job to after a chance meeting. But in the switch, George's star fades while Peppy's rises. It all gets very tragic before it gets better. And there is a dog. The dog is in every scene. I don't know why.
It was kind of dull. I kept thinking about "A Star is Born" so there was a lot of been there, done that. Malcolm McDowell pops in for a second. They was he is listed in the credits I thought there would be more of him. But plenty of room for the dog.
I was amazed how dark this film got. I was expecting something much more light-hearted.
And they guy who plays George basically has one go to move. He cocks his head at a rakish angle in a lip smile that quickly opens to show hundreds of teeth. He must of done this gesture a thousand times. It should be the Artist drinking game, drink when George does the head cock smile.
One tiny sword fight. But they were ripping off Zorro.
