Following up on DM's comments, and from searching on the web, yeah, the travel markets are mostly in bed with tourism and travel markets and want you to "sell" the destination to your readers. Fictionizing parts of your travelog might be an angle, but I have struggled doing fiction based on my own trips (I seem to need to make almost everything up to get anywhere).
Whether you were to go with the facts or fictionalize parts of it, I suspect either way you'd have to mute the Sal angle -- unless you don't give a damn what he thinks. This is unfortunate, because those are some of the best parts.
