Ah mysteries set in a fantasy foreign land that seems a lot like Venice and the church is full of the Spanish inquisition. As matter of fact, the book starts with witches being burned at the stake. The witches in turn incite the crowd to riot and all the Inquisition is drive from the town or slaughtered.
The story picks up years later as the granddaughter of the with is on the brink of womanhood and is about to come into her own powers. Juvela has a rocky road to her prominence as she finds she might be one of the favored of the gods as she watches her town get to ripped to shreds by religious factions.
It was quite the good read. A different sort of fantasy novel about gods and religions. Unfortunately, religion is on the side of evil and seems bent on the destruction of the world.
As is the case in most of the fantasy novels these days, it's the first book in a series. It's a good read but you will be left hanging at the end. It was one of those abrupt sort of closures. I thought there was about thirty pages of book left and it turned out it was glossary and character identifications. Grrr. You might want to wait more books.
