The Odyssey

Quote:Hi,

Unfortunately, the 70mm print we had lined up for tonight is not running correctly in the theater, so we will have to switch to the digital IMAX version of tonight’s feature.

We’re very sorry for the inconvenience, please let us know if this changes your plans for tonight.

Best IMAX film yet. Nolan is the master of the form. It's booming and big and can only be experienced in IMAX. Amazing film. Riveting.

Absolutely D00M recommended...in IMAX. Make the extra effort. It delivers.

I want to see it again.

In IMAX.

Turns out 3 of my friends have background roles and I want to see if I can spot them.

I've been D00M recommending a lot of films here. It's an artifact of my job as a Professional Movie Reviewer. But this time I really mean it. See this in IMAX. It's so worth it.

And if I was Odysseus, I totally would've stayed with Calypso.

I've had the same thought about Calypso each time I've read it.

Incidentally, Suzanne Vega did a good song about Calypso:
the hands that guide me are invisible

Seen it in IMAX from the third row. Christopher Nolan continues to hate linear story telling and always makes it work out. How is Robert Pattinson making such a big career out of being the biggest weasel? Matt Damon went to the gym a lot. I never need to see Circe's sequence again. It's burned in. Is Todd Holland ever going to be a big boy?

I enjoyed it but was not overwhelmed. I think I would rewatch it for the score alone because it add so much. The fact that most of the film was done practically was crazy. I can't even comprehend how you would go about planning for all that. Elliot Page did a really good job. Initially, I thought he was kind of wasted on the beach, but not so much.

I thought a lot about how the hell did they do the handheld shots with the IMAX cameras? Did they put the word out for just the biggest camera operator they could find. That being said I don't know if IMAX added all that much to the experience. Like I said, the music is what really pushed me around. And it might have been because I was too close, but some of the close-ups seemed out of focus, especially when they did the focus pulls from one person to another in a 2 shot.

Glad I saw it. Glad I saw it in IMAX. Now I can be one of the cool kids. No, my IMAX wasn't on film. It was a digital version. There are only 23 theaters in the US that can actually screen it on film, one of which is the SF Metreon.

Fun fact, you can't make an IMAX film, that you are are going to project from film, more than three hours. So, two hours and fifty-nine is about the maximum you can make it. That three hours was cut from the ninety hours of footage shot. Hard to do long Oners with an IMAX because the film mags only hold about 3 minutes worth of film

Agree on the Circe scene. That was disturbing and it’s not like I haven’t seen stuff like that before. It just worked really well. The cyclops worked really well for me too, especially in IMAX.

I’m enjoying all the funny memes and the bts stuff coming out right now.

And I keep coming back to Calypso. Living for eternity with Charlize while munching on lotus flowers? Forget Anne & Tom (although I would go back for the dog).

The best part about seeing The Odyssey early is being able to take part in the conversation currently flooding the interwebs.

So true

It’s got my 20/20 hindsight aflame with comments I wish I put in to our review (which received some amusing rejection comments on KFMs sitonmyfacebook.) A lot of peeps hatin on a black Helen (which I did give a tiny acknowledging nod in our review).

The BTS stuff is insane. I luv the giant cyclops puppet and the fact that they all really crammed into the horse.

Looks like the box office is strong so far. Good for Nolan. His films are always interesting.

60' tall puppet. I was idly thinking I should email Mr. Otero and volunteer to be a PA on the next Nolan film.

I keep thinking Diabetes should be the name of a Greek god. Not a pleasant one, but still.

Shoot. I didn't realize this could have been my popcorn bucket! (At $50, hard pass) And if you look through the viewfinder, there is a film still from The Odyssey.
