I had the same reaction as I did to the first one; no big deal. It was pretty to look at in a lot of places, especially how they did the Disney Logo at the beginning. The plot was a mess. I don't know why it was even in 3-D. Jeff Bridges got to say "Man" a lot as he channeled his younger self.
My biggest moments in the film came when I saw set pieces I had built. tQ was probably annoyed as I prodded her and pointed out things I built through out the movie. Fortunately, a lot of them came up in the first ten minutes of the film.
If you are going to see it, I suggest trying to see the original first. There were a lot of references that I didn't recognize. The other thing I missed was how in the first film there was a lot more references to computers and how the world was built. They seemed to have dispensed with that in Legacy.

It really bothered me that they were't wearing helmets when they were riding the Ducati...apart from that, it met my expectations coming from Disney and being a sequel to Tron. One "meh" for plot, acting, writing. Two "oohs" for visuals. And a "huh" for the soundtrack which had a track here and there that were Tangerine-y It was beautiful to watch and the (non-IMAX) 3D didn't give me a headache.

The 3D was entirely unnecessary, as it has been for pretty much every film I've seen since James Cameron re-inflicted this technology. So far the only 3D I've enjoyed was in the trailer for some sort of nature film about orangutan and elephant orphans that they showed before Tron. That was cool, because I *did* want to reach out and hug the orangutan. I didn't want to reach out and hug 3-D Jeff Bridges, even the evil one. Last I saw him, he was looking down the front of my dress at the Oscars.

What a terrible film.
The original had a goofy plot but at least threw in a nearly non-stop on-the-run adventure. Everything was colorful and bright. The characters were pleasantly one-dimensional and the pacing matched the attention span of the 12 year old target audience.
The remake is boring, bland and dull. The unnecessary dialog scenes are way too long. I was mentally editing them out in my head and shortened the movie by 30 minutes with no loss in character development.
The costumes were X-Men black with a couple white neon spots here and there. Where did the psychedelic blue circuitry patterns go? You'd think that with CGI they could have made costumes that spat energy and flowed around the wearer in a crazy multi-colored labyrinth.
The sets were both spartan and garish and not doing either genre any favors. Flynn's neo-victorian condo was the best example. Plain white walls except for a bookshelf and dining table bearing a roast pig. Everyone knows programs just drink energy straight from the source.
I won't even go into the Zeus scene. WTF?
The 3D was unnoticeable.
All in all I was very disappointed that a great Tron film is still waiting to be made.
Pros: Daft Punk. Acrobatics were nice. Daft Punk. Lightcycle scene was cool but way too short. Daft Punk.
Cons: I paid to see this.

DM was thinking about making an effort to see this, just for old times sake, and because he loves 3D, but despite the frequent disagreements between DM & ED on matters of taste (hollowheads? really?), DM defers to ED's review as Dm has fond memories of ED spattering cyalume on his homemade Tron costume and figures if ED says it sux, he'll just go by that and give it a miss.
P.S. y'all saw my TRONjistu post, right? <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="http://brotherhoodofdoom.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=36&start=420">viewtopic.php?f=2&t=36&start=420</a><!-- l -->

Interesting (arguably) article on some of the visual effects: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://jtnimoy.net/workviewer.php?q=178">http://jtnimoy.net/workviewer.php?q=178</a><!-- m -->

ED, you're spot on. I kept trying to imagine it would be cool in 3d. Then I wanted to see a version where they edit all the dialog out and just play the Daft Punk track louder. There would be moments when DP would surge during some action, and those were fun. Way too far and few in between.
I'm bummed out now.
Young Bridges looked like Polar Express.

I'm still up tweaking over this! Dammit!
What kills me is that with just a few tweaks, this could have been good. The had Daft Punk and cool effects. That's all that was really needed. How did they mess that up? Damn. It!

Don't even get me started on the fight scenes. You're fighting with cyalume aerobies. How hard would it be to choreograph that a little better?

How many good Nunchuk fights have you seen? I can think of only of Bruce Lee's in 'Return of the Dragon'
