Just so you know, war is bad.
It's the story of the Irish Civil War, not to be confused with the war for Independence. So many wars, such a small country.
Basically it's farmers playing dress up and fighting first the British Black and Tans then amongst themselves. The biggest ironic statement comes when the same Irish Farmhouse gets raided in the same fashion by both the British Army and the Irish Free State Army. I wonder if it was too subtle.
I was amazed the film only took two hours to watch. I felt like I was in front of the television all day and most of the night. Especially fun is constantly turning up the volume to understand the increasingly indecipherable and quiet local Irish accents. Then the gunfire breaks out and blows up the speakers.
If you feel you need to no more about the Irish trouble and the battle between DeValera and Collins, I suggest you get a book, one with pictures and a road map. This movie doesn't really help explain the situation as if anything could.
